National Center for the Management of Wildlife Reserves
The National Center for the Management of Wildlife Reserves, abbreviated CENAGREF, is a public body in charge of the conservation and management of protected areas in Benin. It was created in 1996 following the adoption of a national strategy for the conservation of Protected Areas in 1995 and an action plan in 1998. It is a social, cultural and scientific office with legal personality and financial autonomy.
The mission of CENAGREF is the conservation and rational management of wildlife reserves (national parks, hunting areas, sanctuaries...) in collaboration with the local population and civil society. Its vision is Benin's wildlife reserves, an effective tool for the conservation of all the country's biological diversity and a driver of sustainable development.
Currently, supervision is provided by the Ministry of Living Environment and Sustainable Development (MCVDD).
Note that since 2017, the Government of Benin has been committed to the long-term protection of National Parks by signing a partnership with African Parks for the management of Pendjari National Park in 2017 and the W National Park, which is part of the W-Arly-Pendjari Complex, a World Heritage Site, in 2020.
