Group of research and action for well-being in Benin

GRABE-BENIN is a non-profit community association that has been involved since 2001 in building a green and healthy planet on which happy days pass for all existing beings, both for current generations and those of future generations. Since its creation, it has worked through experiential environmental education to promote ecological governance led by indigenous and local communities, the defense of their rights and interests in ancestral areas and territories as well as the valorization of their knowledge and traditional knowledge associated with natural resources. Thanks to the Djowamon (heritage) initiative, GRABE-BENIN has succeeded in creating great visibility on sacred natural sites, which has earned it recognition awards at the national level as well as UNDP support through the PMF/FEM to lead the national initiative to support indigenous and community heritage areas and territories as a catalytic organization. Through this initiative, the promotion of the efforts of indigenous communities in the conservation of biodiversity and their process of strengthening them has aroused the will of their representatives to unite their efforts in order to face the threats to their territories, their natural resources and the knowledge and knowledge associated with them. She led the process of setting up the national association of guardians of ICCAs in Benin, officially registered in Benin. In addition, initiatives to support administrative procedures for the recognition of management rights on ICCAs are carried out in parallel with documentation initiatives, to reduce the dependence of communities on ICCAs by the valorization of local medicinal essences through botanical gardens and the promotion of microcredit in four indigenous communities around emblematic ICCAs. Community dialogues initiated within communities have made it possible to reactivate and strengthen community institutions for the governance and management of Areas and Territories as well as their attachment to these sites. Renewed interest is being given to initiatives for the recreation and enhancement of these Areas and Territories. The creation of botanical gardens and the promotion of micro-credit are not only a tool for reducing the pressure on ICCAs but also a means of economic valorization of traditional knowledge and expertise associated with natural resources. The creation of a national advocacy institution will not only improve the relationships of pressure groups with indigenous and local communities but will also attract more support from partners for ICCs in Benin. The dissemination of the Interministerial Decree No. 0121/MEHU/MDGLAAT/MDGLAAT/DC/DC/SGM/DGFRN/SA of 16/11/2012 setting the conditions for the sustainable management of the sacred forest in the Republic of Benin within the communities aroused the desire of communities to request official acts of recognition of their management rights, it made it possible to strengthen their efforts in regulating access and use of resources of these ICCPs. It has contributed to the improvement of relationships between political-administrative authorities and communities, especially in compliance with the rules established around APAC by the local populations.
