2006 Oct 24Strategic action plan for the rational and community-based management of biological resources and ecosystems, sites and migration corridors of the West African manatee in the wetlands of South Benin
The rational management of natural resources, both physical and biological, is undoubtedly one of the main challenges of the future that concerns all Beninese from North to South, from East to West. The results achieved by the various interventions in the field of conservation and rational use of resources fall far short of expectations. Much remains to be done and this strategy and action plan document gives new life to the issue of managing wetlands in southern Benin in this case and transboundary wetlands. The overall objective set by this action plan is to promote awareness of the local adaptive management of natural resources in accordance with the principle of sustainable development and the endogenous practices specific to local culture. The strategy, in order to reach the objective set, is based on five important points. Five major strategic actions with eight operational action areas support the strategy in its implementation.
Two phases will be observed for more effective actions and sustainable results:
- The first phase lasting three (3) years should cost two billion one hundred six million Francs (2,106,000,000 F) CFA;
- The second phase, lasting five (5) years, should maintain and improve the achievements of the first phase in order to extend to other ecosystems. Its development will be motivated by the results of this previous phase.
