Simplified management and management plan for the sacred forest of Gbebou Yeke

In Benin, sacred forests are forest relics that bear witness to the plant formations that certainly prevailed in the region. They are mostly ecosystems of small areas that are maintained even in areas where forests have not existed for a very long time by local populations for various reasons, due to their sacred nature that populations respect a lot. The main factors that have allowed the effective protection of these sacred forests against any form of destruction are essentially the fear of the deities they shelter, the rituals associated with them, the strength of the community sanction system as well as their multiple cultural and cultic uses. Although they are the places par excellence for the conservation of biological diversity, sacred forests are increasingly under strong human pressure, a potential cause of their degradation. Indeed, the power of the managers of these forests has declined considerably so that in recent years they have been subject to uncontrolled exploitation and other factors of destruction. This trend of degradation has greatly impacted the sacred Gbébouyèkè forest of Parakou, in such a way that it is imperative to develop other means of protecting and strengthening traditional approaches in order to safeguard and restore its biodiversity potential. This is what the PIFSAP has worked to by proposing this Simplified Development and Management Plan for the sacred forest Gbébouyèkè located in the Kpébié district, municipality of Parakou.
