Benin is home to a large number of sacred forests that have been the object of conservation by communities for centuries. According to the inventory conducted by Sokpon and Agbo in 1999, Benin has approximately 2940 sacred forests extending over an area of 18,360 ha. Some forest projects and programs have begun by implementing activities to restore these forest relics in some parts of Benin.Sacred forests have proven to be an important tool for the sustainable conservation of biodiversity. Indeed, they constitute a kind of on-site nursery and genetic reservoirs. Some species of fauna and flora found in sacred forests or in their neighborhoods are endangered and/or endangered species. Among other elements of biodiversity present in sacred forests, there are numerous medicinal plants, large trees considered sacred, several fruit trees that attract avifauna and other wild animals. The relevance of the conservation of sacred forests does not necessarily lie in their size but rather in their value as a refuge for wildlife and plant species.
