2022 Aug 19Report on the implementation of the project to raise awareness and mobilize stakeholders for the implementation of the 2011-2012 national biodiversity strategy.
Although efforts have been made, the evaluation of the biodiversity strategy of 2002 - 2010 (SPANB 2002-10) of Benin made it possible to understand that the objectives are far from being achieved, not only because of a lack of resources or initiatives but in particular because of the lack of synergy of actions and awareness raising. Indeed, the implementation of the 2002-10 NASPB has made it possible to make some progress towards achieving the Aichi objectives, even though serious threats call for appropriate actions to gradually eradicate them. One of the major consequences of these shortcomings and weak points is that certain categories of actors develop predatory behavior without worries. Management/governance, coordination of interventions, communication around the SPANB and the appropriation of achievements by sustainable structures have not been satisfactory. In particular, the lack of ownership of achievements by sustainable structures has limited their sustainability and replicability over time and space. In accordance with the requirements of the Convention, Benin still has a national strategy document for 2020, which must be implemented in a synergistic and coordinated manner in order to meet the vision and guiding principles contained in it. Indeed, the national strategy, based on the shortcomings of the former strategy, is based on the following vision: “By 2020, decentralized local authorities, the State and civil society are more involved in concrete and concerted actions to know, enhance, promote, conserve and restore biological diversity for the socio-economic development and well-being of the populations of Benin”. Therefore, seven guiding principles underpin this strategy and highlight the need for more synergistic actions. This document aims to fill in the gaps and this report summarizes the activities carried out.
