Report on the completion of the preliminary draft of the study for the restoration and management of the sacred forests of the RAMSAR sites 1017 and 1018 in Benin

The RAMSAR Sites 1017 and 1018 in Benin include several hundred sacred forests rich in biodiversity of great importance. Currently, with the emergence of other cultures, the weakness of managers' power and beliefs, the prohibitions that were the mainstay of the conservation of these forests are no longer well respected. As a result, most sacred forests are subject to abusive and uncontrolled exploitation, which leads to their degradation or even total disappearance. But the basic information to develop a restoration project is insufficient. It is in this context that the NGO Cercle pour la Sauvegarde des Ressources Naturelles (Ce.Sa.Re.N) in collaboration with local populations and the support of the Forest Administration has initiated this preliminary project which aims to assess the potential of the sacred forests of Ramsar sites 1017 and 1018 in order to formulate a project proposal for the rehabilitation and sustainable management of these forests. To do so, ecological, socio-economic, cartographic and environmental studies were carried out in order to mobilize the basic information to develop an appropriate project. These studies were accompanied by exchange sessions and awareness-raising sessions for local actors (local populations and municipalities) to ensure the participation of all actors.
