2005 Mar 01Pedestrian count of Buffon Cobs in the Punjabi Biosphere Reserve
Final report
The main reason for the protection and conservation of Protected Areas is the presence of rich and diverse flora and fauna. In-depth qualitative and quantitative knowledge of this biological diversity is a very important prerequisite for the management of these protected areas. A series of wildlife counts was carried out on the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve (the years 2000, 2001, 2002). It guarantees general information on the quality and quantity of mammals in the reserve. However, the lack of reliable, specific information and an ecological and statistical database on natural resources and their dynamics is well known. It is undoubtedly a handicap to the implementation of sustainable management. The Pendjari component of the Natural Resources Conservation and Management Program (ProcGRN) and the Pendjari National Park Directorate of the National Wildlife Resources Management Center (CENAGREF), in order to address this gap, is sponsoring the specific wildlife count in the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve. This is certainly the beginning of a new phase of study for the bio-monitoring of species characteristic of the reserve as a performance indicator. This mission focuses on the statistical treatment of count data for Buffon Cobs and Warthogs by strata in the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve.
