National strategy and action plan for the valorization of priority Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) in Benin (case of wild fruit trees)

Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) are multiple and varied in West Africa in general and in Benin in particular and are used by rural populations on a daily basis to meet their subsistence needs and also as a source of income and employment. As such, NTFPs contribute both to food security and to the reduction of poverty. Despite this socio-economic importance, the potential of these products is still undervalued in Benin. Ignorance of the potential of these resources is due to a lack of inventory, a lack of appropriate knowledge of the role that these products play in household economies and food security in countries. Moreover, the institutional, legal and regulatory, legal and political frameworks for the management and valorization of these NTFPs are unknown. This document presents the study carried out as part of the Technical Cooperation Project (TCP 3303), which aims firstly to take stock of NTFPs through a current picture of the sectors and secondly to identify the constraints of these various frameworks and highlight the opportunities that exist and which can allow the establishment of a sustainable strategy for the valorization of these various resources in the long term.
