Covering an area of one thousand hectares, the community nature reserve “the Sitatunga Valley” is an initiative of the Regional Center for Research and Education for Integrated Development (CREDI-ONG). Centered on a swampy bottom in the town of Abomey-Calavi in southern Benin, this humid ecosystem is one of the last refuges for Beninese biodiversity in the face of galloping urbanization in the south of the country. This protected area owes its name to the remarkable presence of a large aquatic antelope, the sitatunga (Tragelaphus speckii), an endangered species listed on the IUCN red list. Since 2007, CREDI-ONG's actions to achieve the creation of this reserve and the sustainable management of existing resources for the benefit of communities have already achieved significant successes. This dynamic has met with the political will of the Beninese government through the National Center for the Management of Wildlife Reserves (CENAGREF), which is working to create new protected areas in the southern part of the country. This document, which focuses on the management plan for the “Sitatunga Valley” community nature reserve, is prepared under the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWA) for a period of five years. This relatively short horizon will serve as a test period for a substantial revision based on the experiences acquired. This land use plan is presented in four chapters. After the presentation of the reserve, we will successively discuss the legal and institutional framework for development, the valorization of the reserve, the master plan of the development plan and the management plan.
