2006 Jun 01Evaluation of the participatory management plan for the classified forests of Goun-Goun, Sota and Goroubi Rôneraie in Benin: criteria and relevant indicators of success
The participatory management plan for the classified forests of Goun-Goun, Sota and Goroubi Rôneraie developed and implemented by the UNSO project (United Nations Sudano-Sahelian Organization) was evaluated in order to determine the relevant criteria and indicators for the successful management of protected areas. The Delphi method was used. It aims to highlight convergences of opinions and to reach certain consensus on specific subjects, through the questioning of experts. The implementation of the management plan has reduced anthropogenic pressures on natural resources. This reorganization of human activities in classified forests has created new problems. Thus, conflicts between farmers and herders have intensified because populations are stuck in the east by classified forests and in the west by the Djona hunting zone. In relation to these difficulties, the local populations have chosen the criteria and indicators of success of participatory management plans: forest zoning that takes into account the needs of the populations, participation and good governance, the health and condition of the forest, the organization and management capacity of local actors.
