2013 Dec 31Ethnobotanical study of plants used in the treatment of diabetes in pregnant women in Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi (Benin)
The present study identified the plants with antidiabetic properties sold to pregnant
women in Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi. It came back, from these surveys, that the
species most sold by herbalists for the treatment of diabetes in
pregnant women are: Catharanthus roseus L., Lippia multiflora Moldenke and Phyllanthus amarus Sch. and Th.
The recipes are composed of single plants (14.29%) or a combination of
two to eleven plants (85.71%). Their accessible costs vary from 200 to 1000 CFA francs. The most used plant
parts are the leafy stem, the stem, the whole plant, the bark and the
root and the recipes are prepared essentially by decoction and administered
exclusively orally. These results form the basis for subsequent studies aimed at experimentally
evaluating the potentialities of these plants. This will make it possible to
provide parturients with new substances of endogenous origin.
