In 1980, forest formations in Benin occupied less than 12% of the national territory and the average deforestation rate was estimated at 150,000 ha/year between 1960 and 1980. From 1984 to date, the Bank has supported four operations in the forest sector in the country, including PAGEFCOM I, which have had the impact of contributing to the reduction of the annual rate of deforestation to 70,000 ha between 1990 and 2000. The various results obtained by these various programs allowed Benin to reach a forest cover rate of 19% of the territory by the completion of PAGEFCOM-I. Presentation, the forest covers approximately 2.7 million hectares in Benin (or 68% of the national territory). This document is the environmental and social management plan for phase two of the project.
