2022 Aug 29The Challenges of Climate Change in Benin
Climate change represents an undeniable challenge for the world and for Africa in particular. While no country will escape the effects of climate change, Africa is one of the most vulnerable continents. As Benin focuses on boosting economic growth and overcoming poverty, the effects of climate change could further increase its vulnerability. To face these numerous challenges, Benin must now have mechanisms for prevention, mitigation and adaptation. The challenge is vital, as today's decisions will shape the living conditions of future generations. Benin's sustainable development, which is part of the “Beyond Rio+20” process, will depend on the solutions that the country finds to face the multiple challenges caused by the effects of climate change. With this book, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung pursues two goals. First, this book aims to stimulate a dialogue between the political world and civil society in order to find the best solutions for adapting to the multiple effects of climate change. The success of prevention and adaptation to the effects of climate change in Benin is closely linked to the success of political and social dialogue. Adapting to climate change requires close coordination between different sectoral structures because climate effects will have consequences on various key sectors of public policies. Good governance of the structures responsible for decision-making and the implementation of sectoral adaptation policies to climate change is essential for their success. Second, this book intends to provide an overview of the various challenges of climate change in Benin. It thus wants to contribute to the awareness of its challenges by political decision-makers and the Beninese population. The book is therefore intended to be an information base for future political choices.
