2019 Mar 26AWARENESS-RAISING AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF MIGRATORY MARINE SPECIES ALONG THE COAST OF BENIN
In Benin, in addition to the actions developed by competent public administration officials, Nature Tropicale in collaboration with its partners has been developing actions for the community protection of sea turtles along the coast of Benin since 1999. Each year during the spawning season, an emergency plan is implemented to monitor the beaches of Benin with the collaboration of Ecoguards, composed of volunteers equipped for the task. The actions undertaken have made it possible to significantly improve the conservation status of marine turtles in Benin, but much remains to be done. Indeed, despite all these efforts, sea turtles have been and continue to be the subject of several threats in Benin including: accidental fishing by local and foreign fishermen, the poaching of the animal and its eggs, the disturbance of nests, the destruction of habitats and marine pollution.
