2015 Sep 01BONOU MILLENNIUM JOINT PROJECT FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (PCM-BONOU)
In September 2000, 191 countries, including Benin, met at the United Nations Millennium Summit in order to strengthen the world's awareness and commitment to the ideals of peace, justice and the equality of peoples. This Summit resulted in the adoption of the Millennium Declaration and the consensus vision to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 at the global level and at the level of each country. To help countries achieve these goals, the United Nations System designed a project called “Millennium Villages”, which included practical strategies identified to reduce poverty by increasing infrastructure and human capital, while promoting gender equality and environmental sustainability. Inspired by this approach, in 2011, the Government of Benin launched its own project called “Project to support the operationalization of Millennium Villages (PVM)”. Twelve (12) villages were selected for the implementation of this project. Financial support from Japan made it possible to launch and successfully operationalize the pilot phase in the villages of Kandérou, Founougo A and Founougo B in the Banikoara Commune. Encouraged by the results obtained in these villages between 2011 and 2015, the Government of Benin decided to move to the stage of “Millennium Commune” with an initial application to the Municipality of Bonou starting in October 2015 through a new project called “Bonou Millennium Joint Project for Sustainable Development (PCM-Bonou)”. The general objective of this project is to promote sustainable development through an integrated and participatory process leading to the improvement of the living conditions and well-being of the population of Bonou. It supports the implementation of the Municipal Development Plan (PDC) and the Growth Strategy for Poverty Reduction (SCRP).
