This document is a communication on MRV globally. It summarizes the MRV approach after its contextualization and clarification of the concept. Indeed, the challenge of biodiversity loss is particularly acute in Africa:
- Numerous biodiversity hotspots and rich natural resources
- strong direct dependence on ecosystem services
- biodiversity is expected to decline further, in part due to rapid population growth (which is expected to double by 2050) There are huge gaps in biodiversity monitoring in Africa:
- data availability (the wealth of biodiversity data is biased towards the poles) •data quality
- data accessibility (lack of collaboration and publication)
- technical barriers (e.g. availability of software or the Internet)
- the lack of collaboration and communication at the science/policy interface
