In Benin, domestic animals continue to pay a heavy price for various
pathologies despite the importation of veterinary drugs. The ethnobotanical study was
carried out through individual interviews with 661 farmers and agrolivestock farmers
throughout Benin in order to identify plants for veterinary use and their reasons for use. In
total, 241 species have been identified for the treatment of 45 animal diseases and symptoms.
Leaves are the most used organs with a 36% utilization rate.
Decoction and maceration are the most frequent methods of preparation with respective rates of 24% and
22%. The valorization of these plants will involve phytochemical, pharmacological
and ecological studies in order to alleviate the pain of farmers.
