The challenge of saving endangered species in Benin A baby African manatee saved

The town of Ouinhi in the department of Zou in Benin has long been home to an African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis) lodge., a highly endangered species in Benin and everywhere else in its range in West Africa. During the downturn season, significant populations of manatees take refuge in sections of the Ouémé River that are relatively conducive to their survival. These animals then become easy prey. Despite the actions taken, in favor of the protection of this species, by Nature Tropicale ONG, in collaboration with the committee for the protection of the Manatee of Sagon in Benin, several challenges still remain to be met. Nevertheless, we are satisfied with the brave Manatee Ecoguards of Sagon who spare no effort for the survival of this emblematic species in the Ouémé Valley. On Thursday June 14, 2012, a team from Tropical Nature NGO went to Sagon to assist the Ecoguards in the release of a distressed Baby Manatee initially caught by a fisherman. This document is the report
