2012 Jan 018th edition of the National Marine Turtle Day in Benin
Established since 2004 by Ecoguards with the support of Nature Tropicale NGO, the National Marine Turtle Day in Benin is an opportunity for initiators to raise awareness among populations about the importance of saving sea turtles in Benin and in the West African subregion as well as the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on marine turtle conservation measures on the Atlantic coast of Africa. The 8th edition of the National Sea Turtle Day took place on Sunday, January 08, 2012 in Gbèkon in the town of Grand-Popo. It is an opportunity for local communities to celebrate their positive actions in favor of the protection of sea turtles but also to raise awareness among other actors about the sustainable management of natural resources. The highlights of this festivity are among others, the very colorful and eventful carnival across the city, the symbolic release of baby sea turtles with ecotourists and local authorities. It is also worth noting the cultural awareness-raising activities supported by the performance of the artist-Ecogarde Rasta-Jah who has just released his first album, one of which focuses on the protection of sea turtles.
