2010 Jan 01Study on the management of human-elephant conflicts in the W Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (RBTW)
The present study on the management of human-elephant conflicts in the W transboundary biosphere reserve is prepared at the request of the National Center for the Management of Wildlife Reserves (CENAGREF). It is part of efforts to contribute to the sustainable conservation of elephants (Loxodonta africana), a wildlife species that is of ecotourism interest and mobilizes a lot of resources for its protection in Benin and in the W biosphere reserve in particular. The objective of this study is to make a diagnosis of the current situation of human-elephant conflicts, and to find strategies that take into account both the interests of humans and the conservation of elephants.
This study therefore seeks to know the potential areas subject to human-elephant conflict and the mechanisms to be put in place in order to mitigate this state of affairs. It can be noted that human-elephant conflicts mainly take place in buffer zones where human activities encroach on the vital areas of elephants. In total, the areas subject to frequent human-elephant conflicts are the areas of Kaoubagou (Kérou), Alfakoara-Goungoun, Bénésségou, Angaradébu (Kandi) and Térempo Ankouamon (Kandi) and Térempo Ankouamon (Banikoara).
