2022 Aug 23Conservation status of the lion (Panthera leo linnaeus, 1758) in Benin
The IUCN Species Monitoring Commission (SSC) organized two regional workshops, one for West and Central Africa (2005) and the other for East and Southern Africa (2006), in order to establish two regional strategies for lion conservation with the main actors concerned. Beninese wildlife authorities participated in the process of establishing the regional strategy. They expressed their desire to establish a national action plan for the conservation of lions in Benin, while realizing the lack of knowledge about this species in many regions of the country. The objective of this study was to assess the profile of the lion in Benin to serve as a starting point for the future national workshop to develop the national action plan for the conservation of the species.
This report describes the various methods used and the results obtained. A database has been created to collect and analyze both the available information and the information generated by the surveys.
