2022 Aug 22Action plan for the conservation of lions in Benin
The Republic of Benin is determined to conserve lions (Panthera leo) and has just adopted an Action Plan for the
Conservation of Leos. This plan was developed based on the recommendations of the regional
lion conservation strategy during a workshop that brought together the various actors in Grand Popo on 5 and 6
December 2012. The plan defines the various activities for the next five (05) years that
will make it possible to implement actions for the conservation and sustainable management of lions in Benin.
The specific objectives are (i) sustainably managing lions (ii) conserving their habitats and prey, (iii)
reducing human-lion conflicts and (iv) improving the institutional framework. The plan integrates the
transboundary environment of lion populations in Benin, which promotes synergy with neighboring countries, which
share with Benin the WAPO complex system of protected areas. This document is the action plan for the
conservation of Leo, it has a “logical framework” in French and English versions.
