Report on the biodiversity inventory study of the sacred forests of the RAMSAR sites 1017 and 1018 in Benin

The RAMSAR sites 1017 and 1018 in Benin abound with a multitude of sacred forests (FS). Throughout the country in general and in these sites in particular, near cities and villages, we encounter forest islands of varying sizes (a few centiares to a few hectares): these are sacred forests that have an essentially religious and ethnobotanical value, and play an important role in terms of biodiversity. The traditional use and management of these landscapes is centuries-old, which has created resilient and unique ecosystems. However, victims of diverse and increasing human pressures, many of these sacred forests are in the process of disappearing. Some maintain a fragile status, either as a place of worship of “voodoo” or as natural gardens where plants used in traditional medicine grow. This study revealed that sacred forests have a proven wealth of wildlife and plant biodiversity. Specific floristic richness varies from 11 to 62 species. Within the framework of this project, community sites, municipal sites and “non-exploited” private domains may be targeted to promote community reforestation activities. This document is the report of the activities carried out by the project.
