2018 Aug 03Public conference: satellite images for better land use planning and management
For humans, the planet's natural resources are real resources that are essential to their survival. Therefore, their exploitation today must be done rationally so as not to compromise the existence of the future generation. Considered a fundamental resource for maintaining the balance of the planet, the forest has experienced a strong degradation of its space for several decades, which makes it a resource in danger of extinction. Population growth causing the expansion of cities, the expansion of agricultural land and the overexploitation of forests is the main cause. However, through a land use plan and sustainable forest management, humans can benefit from it without destroying it. It is therefore urgent to analyze:
- changes in land use;
- the anthropogenic causes of change;
- the vulnerability of the environment to various changes;
- the resources available to ultimately develop alternative practices that will reverse forest degradation.
To do this, satellite Earth observation data deserve to be used in this fight against the gradual erosion of plant cover. It is in this context that the Laboratory of Biogeography and Environmental Expertise (LABEE), in collaboration with the Spatial Observation of Forests in Central and West Africa (OSFACO) project, the Directorate-General for Water, Forests and Hunting (DGEFC) and other partners, organized a public conference whose theme is entitled: “Satellite images for better land use planning and sustainable management of biodiversity” on the Abbe campus. Omey-Calavi, Benin, in order to draw on research results to define solution approaches for rational management of forest heritage in Benin.
